S3. E9. Holy Spirit

[00:00:00]
we're out here treating the Holy Spirit like Peggy from Hamilton. He will lead you into what is good and true, God's perfect will for your life. And if we're not listening to the Holy Spirit. What are we deferring to?
Welcome to Your Daily Bread podcast. I'm your host, Abbie Stasior, a registered dietitian and certified intuitive eating counselor. My prayer is that these bite-sized episodes will help you heal your relationship with food, improve body image, and ultimately help you grow closer to God. Now, I can't personally heal you, but I'm gonna be directing you to the one that can, and that is Jesus. Also disclaimer, I'm not a pastor, but a sister in Christ that's offering you some food for thought that you can take into your quiet time with the Lord as your daily bread. Let's dig in.
y'all, if you are trying to heal your relationship with food without relying on the Holy Spirit, you are doing this the hard way. And also maybe the wrong way. So we're gonna be talking about today, how to partner more strongly with the Holy [00:01:00] Spirit in your health journey.
And this is our greatest asset. And I am just so passionate about helping people partner with the Holy Spirit because I just feel like we're not tapping into this God-given gift and resource that truly is God himself. So I hope everyone had a great Easter resurrection Sunday and Holy Week, and I love that we're doing this episode now because truly what Jesus did for us on the cross was not just about the forgiveness of sins.
It is about reconciliation back to Christ, where now we are no longer separated from him again. He dwells within us and this is the mystery of the Trinity, this indwelling, this mutual indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Jesus says, I will abide in you and you will abide in me, and you will be one with me as I'm one with the Father.
And I feel like we're out here treating the Holy Spirit like Peggy from Hamilton. Like we're so focused on Angelica and Eliza and it was [00:02:00] like, and Peggy, well, we're here. Abba Father and Jesus and Holy Spirit y'all. We can no longer do that because of what Jesus says in John 16, and we're gonna get into that today.
So Father God, Jesus, holy Spirit, Lord, you are here. Thank you Lord. You are Emmanuel God with us. Lord, we are just so grateful, God for sending your son Jesus to die for us on the cross. Jesus, thank you for your great sacrifice. Lord, we honor and glorify you for raising from the dead. Lord, thank you for your resurrection.
And thank you Jesus, for sending the Holy Spirit to dwell within our hearts so we are no longer separated from you again. And we have the Holy Spirit to help us, to advocate for us, and to lead us into all truth. So Holy Spirit, I pray that you fill this room. Lord, I pray that you fill the room of every single listener.
Lord, I pray that you rest [00:03:00] on them and do what only you can do. Spirit of the living God, I pray that we increase our sensitivity towards you, that we hear your nudge and we obey.
And Lord I pray that we learn how to partner with you 'cause that is what you desire. And I pray that everything that is said in this episode, holy Spirit, what you want to say through me, not what I want to say, less of me and more of you. And it's in Jesus' name we pray. Amen. So we're gonna be getting into John 16 verse seven and then also verses 12 through 15.
That says, but very truly, I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the advocate will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all [00:04:00] truth. He will not speak on his own.
He will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. All that belongs to the father is mine. That is why I said the spirit will receive from me what He will make known to you,
Y'all.
That is the word of the Lord. Hmm. Jesus literally says, it is better if I go, it is for your good that I go, because the disciples are like, well, you're here. This is a good thing. We've been waiting for the Messiah. But he's like, no, no, no. It is better if I go, y'all don't understand. Y'all aren't hearing me.
When you get the Holy Spirit, this is gonna be better. This is going to be better because I will be with you always and you can trust what the Holy Spirit says to you. Because it is from me. The Holy Spirit's not gonna tell you anything that I haven't given it authority to say to you. And it's so cool where it says that he will also tell you what is [00:05:00] yet to come. Now, that's prophecy. He will tell you what is yet to come, and he's your advocate. He's your helper. He leads you into all truth. And when we think about that, if he's leading you into all truth, he will guide you in terms of your relationship with food and how to steward your body.
He will lead you into what is good and true, God's perfect will for your life. So we really wanna make sure that we are listening to abiding in being sensitive to and obeying the Holy Spirit so that we can actually align with God's will for our lives. And if we're not listening to the Holy Spirit. What are we deferring to?
Is it diet culture? Is it influencers? Is it somebody else, a coworker or a friend, and we're just copying what they're doing with their healthy lifestyle? Or are we relying on the spirit of truth that knows us? So intimately and so personally, and this is why as a Christian [00:06:00] dietician, I always say to the clients that I work with, I can't do anything for you.
Even though I'm educated and I've gone to school and I understand, you know, the macronutrients and the nutrition needs that you need as a human. That's not necessarily going to do, do anything for you. You know it, it is helpful to a certain extent, but the best thing that I can do for you is help you partner more strongly with the Holy Spirit, because that is your wisest counsel and that is who is with you all the time.
I see my clients weekly, every other week, monthly for some of them, and we can talk about a lot and cover so much in those sessions, and we're messaging in between sessions. But God is with you always. God is Emmanuel God with us. So the best thing that I can do is help you partner with who is with you always and who is your wisest counsel.
So I wanna give you four practical ways that you can learn how to partner more strongly with the Holy Spirit. Number one, [00:07:00] pause Before you plan, you have to pause before you plan before your meals. Before grocery shopping, before workouts, before doctor's appointments, before buying a supplement. Pause before you plan.
Because if you do not do that, you may be relying on your own understanding of what you think is best, not relying on the spirit of truth. He will lead you into truth. He will lead you into what is holy and correct, and what is the next best step for you. So always pause before you plan. And ask, holy Spirit, what would honor you right now in my body? Number two is create space to hear him y'all. We need more stillness in our lives.
We need more margin. We are so busy. We're so go, go. We're hustle, hustle, hustle all the time. We need to be still and know. He's God. And when we look at that scripture, Psalm 46, 10, the stillness comes before the knowing be still and know. So [00:08:00] if there's something that you want to know, whether it's what to eat, how to exercise, how to steward your body, how to renew your mind, how to break free from these food rules, how to break free from body insecurity, you need to be still in the Lord's presence and.
Sit there long enough where you hear him speak to you personally. I'm currently reading the book More by Alan Kraft right now, which talks about how to experience more of the Holy Spirit. Highly recommend this book. And there's one chapter title literally says, closed mouth, open notebook. And I'm like, that is my mantra right now.
I'm like, in my quiet time, Lord, I'm just going to sit there with my Bible. Of course. But I got an open notebook too, and I got a closed mouth and I'm like, speak Lord for your servant is listening. And that has helped me so much just increase my dependency on the Lord in this season and really hear from him and be operating in his will because I create margin and I actually have it scheduled like an appointment where I'm like, no, this is, this is my [00:09:00] meeting with God.
This is when I meet with God. I know where I know when I schedule it, like an appointment. That stillness and it is uncomfortable to be still and quiet and to practice. Solitude, silence, Sabbath. It goes against the grain of our culture's rhythm, but that's exactly why we need to be doing it. 'cause we're in the world, but we're not of the world.
We need to be doing things distinctly different than how the world is doing it. So taking time to be still and know and to be quiet is active resistance against culture, and it is also an act of trust. Number three, you need to ask better questions. You need to ask better questions instead of asking, Lord, please bless me.
Lord, please help me lose weight. Instead, you could ask, give me a spirit of obedience. Lord, help me to steward what you have given me and help me to obey, Lord, increase my sensitivity to your Holy Spirit [00:10:00] so that I can obey that. Asking better questions is a sign of spiritual maturity. It's not bad to ask questions like, Lord, please bless me, or Lord, what should I eat? 'cause if you're not asking, Lord, what should I eat?
I definitely want you to be asking that. But it is a sign of spiritual maturity when you take it a step further to ask the Lord, give me a spirit of obedience. And that is your prayer. When you're praying Psalm 1 39, Lord, search me. You know, all my ways. Help me to get back on the path of the life everlasting.
Get rid of anything in me that is not of you and is offensive to you. That is a more mature prayer. So we wanna be asking better questions, and that will help you to partner more strongly with the Holy Spirit. So instead of just saying, what should I eat? I think that's a good. First question to ask, but if you have been asking, Lord, what should I eat?
Taking it a step further to ask, Lord, what is in your will to put on my plate? What would nourishing and honoring my body look like today in a way that honors you? How can [00:11:00] I worship you with my body today? What would align me more with peace and not with control, not with fear. The Lord hasn't given us a spirit of fear, but he does promise us his perfect peace that surpasses all understanding.
So, Lord, what can I do today with my healthy habits, with my body to align me more with peace? Now with control, it's a better question. Number four, you want to obey the nudge. When you hear the Holy Spirit, you want to obey no matter how small it is. And YI learned this the hard way recently. I was making cinnamon buns.
I moved into a new apartment recently and this was my first time using the oven. And y'all know if you follow me on Instagram, I have my cooking fails highlight on my page. So if you haven't watched it, please watch it because you will get a really good laugh. I can tell you what to eat is a registered dietician, but I cannot make it for you.
I am a horrible cook. So, , the Holy Spirit clearly [00:12:00] told me. Abby take the rack down a notch in the, in the oven. One of the racks, it was too high up, but I was rushing to a workout and I'm just so impatient when I cook, and this is part of the problem, like I have things burn all the time because I'm so impatient and I, and I'll literally go take coaching calls.
That are 45 minutes to an hour when I have something cooking on the stove. Well, why, why would I be doing that? I, because I'm impatient and the Lord is working on me. But anyway, so the, the Holy Spirit clearly told me to move the rack down one or two things because it was too close to the top. And I was like, well, I'm rushing and I'm just gonna put it in there and set the timer and go work out.
And then I'll come back. Y'all. These cinnamon buns were so burnt at the, like literally smoking everywhere. Praise God. It didn't actually set on fire, but they were inedible. It was so bad and I just did not yield to the spirit in that moment. And part of it was that I was rushing and we know that Jesus never rushed, but in our culture, we are constantly rushing and moving on to the next thing.
We're not pausing and we [00:13:00] miss the Holy Spirit when we don't have that stillness. Y'all know I say this, that it's not a failure, it's feedback. Yes. I say that all the time. And that moment for me was an opportunity where it wasn't a failure. It was, I mean, it was a failure for the cinnamon buns because obviously I couldn't eat them, but it, it was feedback for me because I'm like, oh, that wasn't just a thought in my head.
That actually was the Holy Spirit. He was trying to protect me. He was trying to gimme some wisdom. He was trying to lead me into all truth, and I didn't yield to that. And I suffered the consequence of that. And I was running late that morning and I was running even more late when everything was burnt and I had to deal with all of that and make a different breakfast.
So the point of all this is, that's a silly example, but it's important to obey that nudge even when it seems small, even when it doesn't make sense. There have been so many times where, the Lord has told me, and this has happened with my fiance as well, the Lord will be like, make a right here. Where I'm like, Lord, I'm trying to make a left.
No, no, no. Make a right and it turns out we like see on the news, there's literally an accident that happened on that [00:14:00] highway that we were about to get on. Like crazy stuff like that has happened and sometimes you see it on the news, but sometimes you don't. You don't know what the Lord is protecting you from or why he's taking you on this detour that way.
Maybe he's calling you to make a right when you were planning on going left so that you can encounter, someone that's unhoused on the side of the roads that you could give them something. I always recommend having, you know, some sort of bags or water bottles or protein bars or something in your car, or cash, cash works to,
You just never know what divine appointments you could be missing. , The Holy Spirit's going to lead you into those things. Your obedience builds sensitivity. So. You're gonna be more sensitive to the Holy Spirit, the more obedient that you are, and then the more that you learn the Holy Spirit's voice and you're partnering with him, that builds your confidence.
That helps you to be more obedient. So it ends up being a positive feedback loop. And even the times when you don't listen to the Holy Spirit like me with the cinnamon buns, now I know his voice. I know it wasn't just a voice in my head. I'm like, oh, that was the Holy Spirit. And I know his voice better, so I'm going to be more obedient next time and I'm going to yield to that.
'cause [00:15:00] I'm like, oh, I know that that wasn't me. That was the Holy Spirit. So I pray that this is helpful. If you are feeling stuck in your health journey, it's not that you need more discipline, it may be that you just need greater dependence. You need to be more dependent on the Lord to help you and.
What an amazing gift that we have God dwelling within us. And if we're not tapping into that partnering with God, then it's like Jesus dying on the cross. Well, what was all of this for? Yes. The forgiveness of our sins. Yes, salvation, but he left so that we could be dwelling within him. Always abide in me and I will abide in you.
And , it makes the cross even more worth it. Right. Jesus went through to great lengths to the point of death so that he could never be separated from us again. And so we have access to him. And if you're not accessing that access, then you're really missing out on one of one of the greatest gifts your wisest counsel from God.
