thanksgiving episode

[00:00:00] it's giving Colossians to 20 to 23. It's giving Isaiah 29 13, these verses that talk about how we operate based on merely human commands and teachings. and we follow culture's way of doing things, the old way of doing things and not by.
Spirit led, godly conviction and what Jesus actually said, And his word says that for everything God created is good and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving,
Welcome to Your Daily Bread podcast. I'm your host, Abbie Stasior, a registered dietitian and certified intuitive eating counselor. My prayer is that these bite-sized episodes will help you heal your relationship with food and improve body image, as well as help you grow closer to God. Now, I can't personally heal you, but each week I'll be directing you to the one that can, and that is Jesus. As a disclaimer, I'm [00:01:00] not a pastor, but a sister in Christ providing you with some food for thought for you to bring to the Lord and into your quiet time as your daily bread. Let's dig in.
Happy Thanksgiving y'all. Y'all. I said last week, Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. I am just so overjoyed. I love this time of year and. I was a neuroscience major in college and what I can say is that there are so many studies out there that show that gratitude changes our brain and there actually have been studies out there that show that when you are truly feeling grateful, you can't feel other negative emotions.
So there is really something to gratitude the way that the Lord wired our brain and and designed us. Gratitude shifts everything. It shifts the atmosphere, shifts your perspective. It literally changes the neural connections in your brain. So I just pray that you spend time truly in [00:02:00] prayer, in your quiet time, thanking the Lord for all that he's done.
That is my prayer that you all recognize. Even if you're going through something that's tough, even if you're suffering, even if you just got a diagnosis, even if you're struggling with an eating disorder or healing your relationship with food. Even if you had a binge yesterday and you're in the middle of a backslide, there's still things to be grateful for and one of them.
Is that God is still good, that God is never going to leave you nor forsake you. That there is healing in Christ. That there is no condemnation in Christ Jesus, that his mercies are new every day. If you look around and you're looking at your life and your circumstances and you literally have nothing to be grateful for, which I would question 'cause I think we always have something to be grateful for, but just say you have, you look around, there's nothing to be grateful for.
Start speaking scripture over yourself because that is the truth, and there is so much in scripture to be grateful for. Ugh, my gosh. And it's such a [00:03:00] good day to remind yourself of the gospel. We have to remind ourselves of the gospel every day because we forget the gospel every day, the gospel is sufficient.
There's so much to be grateful for when you just start meditating on what Jesus did for you, that God loved you so much, that he would send his son Jesus to die so that he could never be separated from you again. He ached so much that sin separated man from him that sin separated you from the Lord, that he made a way to never be separated from you again.
He was willing to give up his son so that he could be reconciled back to you. That's how much he loves you so much because you're made in his image and his likeness. Angels are not made in his image and likeness. Only us. And that's, oh my gosh. I'm just, whoop, this is not even the point of the episode, y'all.
I'm just. I'm just feeling super grateful today. And I hope that you are to tiz the season. [00:04:00] Jesus is the reason for the season today we're gonna be getting into first Timothy, not four eight. I know some of y'all were thinking about going there. Uh, we probably need to do another episode on that soon, but we're gonna be in one Timothy four verses one through five.
I'm really excited about this, so let me pray us in. Father God, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you for all that you have done. Thank you for providing for us, for never leaving us nor forsaking us. Lord, for loving us so much that you sent your son Jesus to die for us. Lord, thank you for choosing our bodies as your eternal dwelling place.
Thank you for always seeing us. For never taking your eyes off of us. Thank you for creating us in your image and your likeness. Lord, thank you for the Holy Spirit, our wisest counsel, our comforter, [00:05:00] our Paraclete. Lord, we are just so grateful. We come before you, humbly Lord, and we repent of the times where we have taken your provision and your goodness for granted.
Where we have not acknowledged you, Lord, we just, we just surrender.
Lord, I pray that anyone listening that has a heart and heart today, that it's, it becomes a heart of flesh and that it softens Lord, and that they're able to get into a posture of surrender, a posture of gratitude. Lord, I just pray that you bring to every single listener's remembrance. Bring to the top of mind all of the good things that you've done.
Right, and all the things that they've been through that you, you have stood by them and you've gotten them through that. Thank you Lord, that it is by your stripes that we are healed. We are just so grateful. Lord, I pray that this episode pulls a Romans 12 1 2 over our minds and helps us to renew our mind around how we see food around Thanksgiving [00:06:00] because we want to see.
Everything as you see it. We wanna see ourselves as you see us. We wanna see food as you see it, Lord. So give us eyes to see food as you see it. Help us to receive all of the food that you have given us, regardless of the nutrient count, or the macros, or the calorie density. Help us to receive every, every food that you have provided with Thanksgiving and help us to feel peace.
This holiday season around food and around our mealtimes and in our bodies. Thank you Lord for being our prince of peace and for giving us peace that surpasses all understanding when the world says we should worry about what we're eating. Lord, you said, do not worry about what you'll eat or what you'll drink, or what you'll wear is that life more than food and the body more than clothes.
Lord, thank you. For telling us not to worry.
Lord, [00:07:00] please replace our worry with your peace and gratitude. Thank you, Jesus. Allow this episode to be none of me and all of you, Lord, and give every listener ears to hear in name we pray. Amen. So one Timothy four. Verses one through five, it says, the spirit clearly says that in later times, some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons.
Such teachings come through hypocritical liars whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron. They forbid people to marry and order them to abstain from certain foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth. For everything God created is good and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with [00:08:00] thanksgiving because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer.
The word of the Lord, y'all. Woo. There is so much here and this is, it's giving Colossians to 20 to 23. It's giving Isaiah 29 13, these verses that talk about how we operate based on merely human commands and teachings. And we follow culture's way of doing things, the old way of doing things and not by.
Spirit led, godly conviction and what Jesus actually said, we do this in so many areas of our lives, like sheep, we go astray. But we always wanna bring it back and think about, okay, this is what the world says to do, Lord, what do you want me to do? What does your word say? And it says, , by those who believe and know the truth.
So you have to know the truth. You have to know the word or else you will be very [00:09:00] deceived about. What God's word says, especially with when it in regard to how to eat you, and it even says in end times, and we know we're in the end times, we're getting close to end times. People are going to abandon their faith and they're going to follow, they're going to be deceived by spirits of demons, right?
Things that are not of God. So we need to be very alert, and that's why we have to know our word so that we are not deceived. There's a great sense of urgency here in this letter to Timothy from Paul. And so when we look at God's scriptures in regards to food, we see that in Mark seven, God declares all foods clean.
This is reiterated in acts when Peter is trying to follow old food rules and he's being restrictive. This is reiterated in First Corinthians, multiple chapters in Corinthians. We've [00:10:00] talked about on the podcast a lot of one Corinthians 10, 10 23. Everything is permissible, not everything is beneficial.
Romans 14. This is reiterated where Paul says, on the authority of Lord Jesus. No food in of itself is wrong to eat. This is reiterated in Colossians two 20 to 23. Like so many places in scripture, it says that because Jesus came not to abolish the law, but to fulfill the law, we are not bound by the same food rules in the Jewish tradition.
And what are the food rules today that we are typically bound by? The modern food rules of today are diet culture, and we are being deceived, and we are just so bound by the way that the world's doing things. And so we have to look at the truth.
And God's word says that everything God created is good. Nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, consecrated by the word of God and prayer. So whatever you [00:11:00] eat on Thanksgiving. Whether it be mashed potatoes, stuffing corn casserole, pumpkin pie, apple pie, ice cream, chocolate,
Beans, greens, potatoes, tomatoes, lamb ramps, you name it.
If you pray over your meal, if you give thanks to the Lord while eating it, before eating it, you are safe to eat it. It is not to be rejected now. We don't wanna be overeating past the point of fullness. We don't wanna be eating things that the Lord said not to eat. Like if he has clearly told you, Hey, dairy doesn't agree with you, please cut back on the dairy my daughter.
But you continue to eat it to the point where you are getting sick and having irregular bowel movements, that's a problem, right? So we need to use discernment, and that's why it says in one Corinthians 10 23, everything is permissible, not everything's beneficial. Romans 1414 says, no food in of itself is wrong to eat.
But if a person believes it's wrong, then for that person it is wrong. So we need to know that we have [00:12:00] peace around all foods. God will. Be okay with you eating any food, but you wanna partner with the Holy Spirit to discern what is right for me to eat in what portion size. Because it may be okay for you to eat pie, but do we need to have the whole pie, half a pie, multiple slices of that?
I don't know. You have to partner with the Holy Spirit to figure that out. Nobody can tell you what the right portion size is. But your body will give you cues as your fullness cues are emerging. So we wanna be attuned to that. And the Holy Spirit, your wisest counsel, will also guide you, especially if your hunger cues and your fullness cues are not reliable at this time, or you're not as attuned to them.
But I just want everyone to just try this holiday going in with less worry, less anxiety, and more freedom, less fear, more freedom, less obsession, and more obedient. And his word says that for everything God created is good and nothing is to be rejected if it is [00:13:00] received with thanksgiving, because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer and who is the word of God?
Jesus. And we know Jesus came down to abolish law, but the fulfill the laws. We're not bound by these food rules. What are modern day food rules? Diet, culture. So we are not bound like . You don't have to have cauliflower mashed potatoes. Now, if you genuinely like that taste or you're allergic to potatoes or whatever, like that's fine, but you don't have to eat that just because it's less calories.
Give thanks to the Lord. Thank you Lord for the provision to buy this food. Thank you for the people that I'm with. Lord, thank you. For your goodness. Thank you for freedom. Thank you for Jesus. For it is for freedom that Christ has set you free.
That's Galatians five one.
So my encouragement would be to walk in freedom this Thanksgiving holiday and give him thanks and worry less about what you're going to eat [00:14:00] because. The first episode of season two, this would be a good episode for you to listen to if you haven't already. The first episode of Season two talks about Do Not Worry, and that's where we talked about Matthew six, where it says, don't worry about what you're going to eat or drink, or what you'll wear.
Isn't life more than food in the body, more than clothes? Yes. So seek him. Seek his kingdom, his righteousness. Everything will fall into place. Everything will be given to you. Keep seeking him and his word. Pray over your meals. Receive them with thanksgiving, and that delights the Lord.
The Lord cares less about what you're eating but more about the heart posture behind why you're eating it. If you have a grateful heart and you're acknowledging him in that, that gives him glory. I say this all the time in the podcast, but we're too critical about the foods that we eat, not recognizing the fruit that it may be producing.
I can't tell you how many clients that are going to be eating on Thanksgiving, that are finally gonna let themselves eat dessert that are finally gonna let [00:15:00] themselves have a carb. And some of my clients struggle with even eating a protein source at dinner. And so the fact that they'll eat Turkey tomorrow is huge, and that is a win.
So I just pray that going into Thanksgiving, that you go in with a grateful heart and more peace around food and true food freedom, and no guilt, no shame.
No fear. God has not called you to a spirit of fear, but one of power, love, and a sound mind. And so clinging to these verses because there are deceptive spirits, hypocritical liars, who don't have a good conscience, that don't have your interest at heart, that are trying to sway you to the way of the world.
So we have to block out those voices. We have to block out those influencers. Don't go to the workout class. After Thanksgiving, that's telling you that you have to burn off the Turkey that you ate. We need to stop listening that type of rhetoric because that is not [00:16:00] helping you.
That's not leading to the fruit of the spirit. It's leading to more guilt and shame. In fear around food and eating, and that is not God's best for you. So focus on gratitude. Focus on provision, focus on the people that you're with. Eat breakfast. We talked about that last week. And give thanks to God for the food that you have.
And don't worry so much about what you're going to eat and if you need help navigating your relationship with food. And the holiday season is really making you see, oh boy, like I, I need some help. Then head to the show notes and book a free call with me and we can talk about options to work with me.
But on that initial 20 minute free call, I do give you some initial tips on how to get started and some scriptures that speak into your situation. I am so grateful for every single listener. Thank you for keeping this show going. You all are. This is such a gift. I'm so, so grateful for every single one of you.
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Happy Thanksgiving and I hope that you enjoy this food and receive it with Thanksgiving. Love y'all.
