Your Daily Bread Podcast-8: [00:00:00] You are in a new season now. You have grown since then. So many people idolize old versions of themselves when they were in a smaller body. Were you actually healthy at that point? Were you happy at that point?
did you have back then the relationship with God that you do now?
Welcome to Your Daily Bread podcast. I'm your host, Abbie Stasior, a registered dietitian and certified intuitive eating counselor. My prayer is that these bite-sized episodes will help you heal your relationship with food and improve body image, as well as help you grow closer to God. Now, I can't personally heal you, but each week I'll be directing you to the one that can, and that is Jesus. As a disclaimer, I'm not a pastor, but a sister in Christ providing you with some food for thought for you to bring to the Lord and into your quiet time as your daily bread. Let's dig in.
Your Daily Bread Podcast-8: Hey y'all.
Welcome back to your Daily Bread podcast. I am very [00:01:00] excited to record this episode as we get into warmer months and head into summer.
Father God, thank you for this day, Lord. thank you for your word. Lord. Thank you for speaking through your word, Lord. Lord, open our hearts and speak Lord, for your servants are listening. Lord, I pray that as we get into this episode, I'm just praying for wisdom and revelation, and that your word is illuminated and that we see ourselves in the text. Lord, thank you that your word is. The same today, and forever. And there is so much to glean from this text, Lord. And even though this story is not about us, you decided to include us and allow a way for your word to be applicable to the things that we go through today, Lord. So thank you for.
Allowing us to be receptive to hear this [00:02:00] message, and I pray that you speak and just whisper into the ear of every single listener into their personal situation. Holy Spirit, have your way. And Lord, I just pray that everything that is said in this episode is not what I want to say, but is what you want to say.
Jesus and Jesus's name we pray. Amen. Let's dive into Genesis. We are headed to the Old Testament, Genesis 19. We're gonna start with verse 15. It says, With the coming of dawn, the angels urged a lot saying, hurry, take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you'll be swept away when the city is punished. When he hesitated, the men grasped his hand and the hands of his wife and of his two daughters and led them to safety out of the city. For the Lord was merciful to them.
As soon as they had brought them out, one of them had said, flee for your lives. Don't look back. And don't stop anywhere in the plane. Flee to the mountains or you will be swept [00:03:00] away.
But lot's wife looked back and she became a pillar of salt. And we end with that in verse 26. So there's a lot going on here. This is the chapter where Sodom and Gamora is destroyed God brings about just. Punishment and judgment onto Sodom and Gomorrah. Lot of just evil and despicable things going on at this point in history in those regions.
And saves lots, saves his wife and brings them, safety and They even listened to lot and take him to a different place than where they had originally attended and where they were going. So the Lord was merciful in saving them and pulling them out of Sodom, but also was accommodating to them.
It didn't just bring them for other family, but accommodating to where they wanted to end up. But. [00:04:00] Lot's wife looked back and became a pillar of salt. She looked back at the destruction that was, she looked back on delivered her from. And how often are we doing that when it comes to our and our food?
When we look back at old photos of ourselves from previous seasons. The Lord has delivered you from so much. You are in a new season now. You have grown since then. So many people idolize old versions of themselves when they were in a smaller body. Were you actually healthy at that point? Were you happy at that point?
did you have back then the relationship with God that you do now? I got compliments in my body when I was at my smallest size, but that's when I was the sickest. I was literally [00:05:00] chronically ill, barely could eat anything. The walk from my apartment to my grad school classes, I would almost pass out in the streets of New York City because my blood sugar was so low 'cause I was barely eating anything.
When society glorified me the most, and if I look back at photos of myself from that time and like, oh darn, I wish I could get back there. I wish I could be that size again. The Lord delivered me from that. It says in the text that the Lord was merciful to them. the Lord was merciful to you to keep you there.
The Lord has delivered you from your past.
We don't wanna longingly look back on that, and We don't wanna condemn ourselves that we're in and you know, bring that to the Lord people will look back at photos and they actually were healthier, then they had better routines, and maybe they had a relationship with God that was more liveli or vibrant and they were more consistent with getting in the word than they are now.
We don't [00:06:00] wanna longingly look back on that, and we don't wanna condemn ourselves for not being there now. But we wanna embrace the season that we're in Maybe to societal standards because we were in a smaller body, we were more accepted. But that doesn't mean your smallest self is not your healthiest So We don't want to be like lots wife looking back, longingly to a time and a place in our lives where there was a lot of destruction.
because it was familiar. Christine Kane talks a lot about Lot's Wife and she has a book called Don't Look Back. I highly recommend that y'all read it. And she deep dives into this verse and she says, don't be like lot's wife. Don't be looking back longingly. Because the Lord, is trying to take you into the good plans that he has for you.
He has plans to prosper you and to give you hope in a future and to heal you and keep working on you. The Lord loves you too much to keep you there. And [00:07:00] even if you're looking back at that one example it was a healthier version of yourself.
A time where you are more on fire for God and consistent with healthy habits. It doesn't mean that the Lord wants you to go back there because he loves you too much to just stay there. So it's like how can we bring some of those elements into the season that you're at now in a healthy way in, in the season that you're in? I They'll look back. At photos and memories of times in their lives where they had hours and hours and hours to spend quiet time with the Lord and before they had kids, before they were married.
Well, you're in a different season now, so things are gonna look different. So you have to give yourself grace. Doesn't mean that you're failing in some way 'cause you can't have quiet time for three hours, but it means that your time abiding with the Lord and communing with him is going to look different in this season.
So we don't wanna look back longingly where we once were. Her, but we recognize the season that we're [00:08:00] in, maybe even praying Ecclesiastes three, to show you how to optimize the season that you're in
especially as we go into summer, I want to urge you to. Resist the temptation to look longingly at old photos of yourself. where you were unhealthy and maybe had a lot of disordered eating in the thick of diet, maybe had an eating disorder because the Lord has brought you out of that for a reason.
The Israelites did this so much. The journey in the wilderness, the journey to healing, the journey to the promised land was really hard. And there were days where the Israelites said, well, let's just go back to Egypt, because that's was familiar to them. And sometimes what we see as familiar, we think is better because we're comfortable.
But God is trying to make us uncomfortable to get us to a better place that we've never been before. But that takes a journey that takes being in the wilderness, that takes [00:09:00] pruning and getting rid of the old self, renewing your mind, getting rid of those old beliefs that you had when you were in bondage.
And that takes time. don't put on those Rose colored glasses and look back longingly at where you were and think that that was better, because where the Lord is taking you is better.
Your version of Egypt that you're looking at in those photos is not better and not God's best for you.
I don't want you to miss out on where God is trying to take you because you're so focused on the past.
if this is you and this is resonating with you, and you have a tendency to look back at those photos, I want you to delete them. Maybe even have a friend to go through and delete them for you if it's too triggering for you to do it yourself. It is so important that you do not look back because you will miss where God wants to take you.
If you [00:10:00] continuously keep living in the past, as you're trying to heal your body image and heal your relationship with food, it's too sensitive of a time you're, it's too vulnerable of a time to be looking back re-triggering yourself. So don't look at those. And I want, I just pray that the veil is lifted and the scales fall off your eyes so that if you do see those photos that come up in your memories or something, you can, number one, have the strength to delete them.
But number two, see with clarity that that was not a healthy time, that that was not God's best for you and that we don't wanna longingly go back there, but that's where the Lord delivered you from. his mercy has delivered you from that and is bringing you to the promised line. It is bringing you somewhere better in this new season that you're in.
You don't have to look back at those old photos. Delete them. [00:11:00] Get rid of the temptation.
Unfollow accounts on social media that are triggering for you, will help you to have a more fruitful summer.
