S2. E7. NEW last supper
===
[00:00:00] I hear so often that people eat so much because they don't know when they're gonna allow themselves to have it again, and then they have to eat the whole thing so that it's not available for them to eat tomorrow.
Unfortunately, all that is a disordered relationship with food, and that is rooted in control, rooted in scarcity, rooted in guilt and shame,
and ultimately rooted in spiritual misalignment .
Welcome to Your Daily Bread podcast. I'm your host, Abbie Stasior, a registered dietitian and certified intuitive eating counselor. My prayer is that these bite-sized episodes will help you heal your relationship with food and improve body image, as well as help you grow closer to God. Now, I can't personally heal you, but each week I'll be directing you to the one that can, and that is Jesus. As a disclaimer, I'm not a pastor, but a sister in Christ providing you with some [00:01:00] food for thought for you to bring to the Lord and into your quiet time as your daily bread. Let's dig in. Hello. Hello. Welcome back to Your Daily Bread podcast. And welcome to a Holy Week. Y'all. This is my Super Bowl. I look forward to this week, all year. And I've been having some profound encounters with God already, , I have plans on Friday, on Good Friday to watch the movie, the Passion of the Christ and Take Communion and , I've just made room in my schedule more margin to be in silence and solitude with the Lord, and I'm just looking forward to being with him.
And that is my prayer for you too. I know Easter can be such a busy season with families and serving at church on top of work and everything else we're doing. But my prayer is that you do find some time to get with the Lord one-on-one and. Just acknowledge Jesus and all that he [00:02:00] has done for you and everything that He has brought you through.
And what we're gonna be talking about today is the Last Supper syndrome, which makes sense for Holy Week. Where there is the Last Supper. The last Supper syndrome is the urge to indulge before. A big change, whether that's a diet, a fast or a health condition, it definitely is associated with fear and scarcity.
It can happen around the holidays and different celebrations. It's like a last hurrah in your mind before you have to give up that food or you won't allow yourself to have that food either again or. For an extended period of time or an unknown amount of time. So you typically overeat on that food and it is deeply rooted in fear and scarcity and control, and frankly, diet, culture.
And as we know Jesus [00:03:00] models how to eat. So we are going to look to him and how he conducted himself at the last Supper because that can give us some indication on how we should conduct ourselves in terms of our relationship with food. So I'll pray as in Father.
God, thank you so much for loving us. We love because you loved first God. You so loved the world that you sent your son to die for us. Jesus, we are just so grateful for your great sacrifice. Thank you Lord for your courage and for your strength and for offering your body as a sacrifice. And standing in our place so that we are forgiven of our sins and also so that we could be restored back in friendship with you.
And thank you Lord for the gift of the Holy Spirit because now our temples are, bodies are, [00:04:00] hearts are your dwelling place forever, and we are never separated. You are closer than our skin. Thank you, Jesus, for everything that you are. And for everything that you've done, Jesus, thank you for paying it all.
In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
We are gonna be reading from Luke chapter 22. Starting at verse 14. It says, when the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. He said to them, I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God.
After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, take this and divide it among you. For I tell you, I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes [00:05:00] and he took bread, gave thanks and broke it and gave it to them. Saying This is my body given for you, do this in remembrance of me.
In the same way after the supper, he took the cup saying, this cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. Mm, y'all. This is so beautiful. There's so many different directions. We could take a Holy Week episode, but I really felt called, and even on my prayer walk this morning, the Lord confirmed that he did want me to talk about this
I was on a call with a client yesterday and she said, you know what I realized Abby.
I don't have to overeat something to enjoy it. And I said, no, you don't. And I was like, that's a beautiful revelation that you've had. And she's like, yeah, I used to overeat ice [00:06:00] cream all the time, but the other night we went out with the family. I got a little waffle cone. I got one scoop of ice cream, and I was satisfied.
And I had so much fun and it was great. And I didn't have to overeat on the ice cream. To enjoy it. And that's exactly what Jesus is modeling here because he said, this is the last time that I'm going to eat this bread before the fulfillment of the kingdom of God. This is the last time I'm going to drink from the vine and have this wine.
It's the last time I'm gonna do this. So, you could think that there was an element of scarcity there. But there's an element of abundance. He took the bread, he gave things, he broke it and gave it to them. He distributed it. How often are we like, Nope, I'm not gonna give these cookies to anyone else.
These cookies are mine, y'all can have them for the next 40 days, but I'm not gonna be able to have 'em for the next four days. So I need them now, and we're not so willing to share. So we have a tight grip on it, and we have [00:07:00] that fear of scarcity versus an abundance mindset.
So Jesus models here an abundance mindset and that you can enjoy something that you're not going to have for a while without overindulging on it. And I love that it says here that. Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table and they dined. This was a supper and a celebration, and they had long discussions and they took their time.
This was not a shoveling in of food out of emotional distress, and Jesus was distressed. Literally at the table he is talking about who betrayed him, and then in the Garden of Gethsemane, he was so stressed that it was like he was sweating blood.
So Jesus was distress. And eventually he gets to a point where he said, Lord, let your will be done. He works through that, but he didn't cope with his emotions. Through food. He dined with people. He took his time. He didn't overeat, [00:08:00] but he savored what he was eating.
And I love that. He says too, do this in remembrance of me if you have to give up a certain food because now you have a medical diagnosis. I know so many clients that get diagnosed with celiac disease. They really miss gluten, but they cannot eat gluten because it would negatively impact their health now in a life-threatening way, but do this in remembrance of me, praise God for the diagnosis. Praise God that there's healing. Praise God that it's never been so easy to be gluten-free. I'm not saying that it is a hundred percent easy, but there are more gluten-free options available now.
More gluten-free restaurants and bakeries now. Then there were 10, 20 years ago. It is a comparatively easier time to be gluten-free than it was. Not that it is an easy diet, but do this in remembrance [00:09:00] of me and what the Lord has delivered you from, healed you, from, shielded you from and where he's bringing you to.
what do you do when you have to give up a food forever? We keep an abundance mindset because even if. There is a food that you cannot eat because you are allergic to it and it would not serve your body to eat it, whether it's an allergy or an intolerance or sensitivity.
We want to keep an abundance mindset because there is an abundance of foods that you can eat. I hear so often that people eat so much because they don't know when they're gonna allow themselves to have it again, and then they have to eat the whole thing so that it's not available for them to eat tomorrow.
Unfortunately, all that is a disordered relationship with food, and that is rooted in control, rooted in scarcity, rooted in guilt and shame,
and ultimately rooted in spiritual [00:10:00] misalignment.
So it's something to evaluate and if that is your pattern where you go super hard with foods and then you feel like you have to restrict them, you have to eat all of the food. So it's not available again. You are trying to control your eating . And you're holding such a tight grip on it versus surrendering and letting the Lord help you, the Holy Spirit help you because self-control is a fruit of the spirit.
Definitely go to,, an earlier episode in season two where we talk about the fruit test and how to develop the fruit of the spirit of self-control, and it's a byproduct of walking with God in that area, not relying on your own understanding of how to control your nutrition, and you're probably feeling out of control.
With nutrition and a lack of peace because you're trying to control it too much and you have too tight of a grip.
So it's important to look at these scriptures and see how Jesus modeled how to eat, and he comes from a place of relaxation, [00:11:00] peace, patience, abundance, and reverence. That's how we want to eat. The Lord has called me to fast coffee, which makes sense based on our caffeine episode a couple weeks ago.
We knew that was coming, right? So I'm still in, in my coffee fast and. It would be very easy for me to have four shots of espresso the day before. The Lord called me to do that as a last hurrah before giving up caffeine. But that would not be good for my body, and it would not be good for my body the next day when I start the fast, because I'd have to go through all of that withdrawal and deal with horrible headaches.
It would actually be kinder to my body to start to wean off of caffeine before the fast. Versus just such a harsh cutoff. It's not treating the body with kindness, it's not treating the temple well, and thus that's not honoring to God.
In Numbers 20, the story of Moses and the water and the rock, the Lord called Moses to speak to the rock, [00:12:00] not hit the rock, but then he did hit the rock and he was harsh to it and he is being disobedient to God in that moment.
So we don't wanna hit our bodies into submission, but we want the fruits of the spirit. We wanna be kind and gentle and patient with ourselves and loving. If you are stuck in this guilt and shame spiral where you feel guilty for eating a quote unquote bad food, so now you feel like you have to eat this bad food in excess or eat all of it so it's not available for you tomorrow, that you are stuck in a guilt and shame spiral, and we have to let go of the food guilt and start to work towards you giving yourself unconditional permission to eat that food and not seeing that food.
As bad. You are not bad for eating that food and actually giving yourself more access, more regular access to it, takes away the lure. It takes it off the pedestal, so you're less likely to binge on it if it's just available.
So I just pray that y'all meditate on this scripture. To imagine yourselves [00:13:00] sitting at the table with Jesus and the other disciples, reclining back dining, and hear what Jesus is saying about the bread and an abundance mindset in patience and taking your time and reverence, and see what he says to you specifically about your relationship with food.
Ask him. Ask him for wisdom. James one five says that when we ask for wisdom, he gives that to us abundantly. So ask him for wisdom. Lord, what is it about my relationship with food that needs to be fixed? Lord, search me. Am I rooted in scarcity? Do I have too tight of a grip and I'm rooted in control? Am I stuck in a cycle of guilt and shame?
And can you come in and heal those parts of me, [00:14:00] reorder my steps, and guide me to godly support that can help me in this area?
