Join us by taking a seat at our table as we break bread and allow God in to break the chains of diet culture.
Hannah: Hi everyone. Today we are going to be talking about Jesus as the bread of life and the living water. So I'm going to be reading a couple things out of John, but we're going to start with John 4 verses 13 through 14. Jesus answered, Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst.
Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life. So this comes from You might know or be familiar with this. This is like the woman at the well, the Samaritan woman. And so the purpose of this whole, um, story is, first of all, she's a Samaritan, Jesus is a Jew.
She was kind of like, whoa, you're a Jew. What are you doing talking to me? And so Jesus is kind of like closing that gap there, um, in regard to like the social standing and like, Jews versus Samaritans. So him, you know, approaching her and talking to her, that was like very symbolic there. And, um, you know, after their whole encounter, she's really excited to share, you know, the good news of Jesus.
And he's telling her and telling us about That essentially, like, yeah, we need water on Earth to quench our thirst and to help us, you know, live, uh, and we also will never be eternally satisfied with the earthly water, which is why we need water. Christ, because he is the living water. And so, you know, and when we accept him, he says, I, I will become like a spring and, uh, in them of water, welling up to eternal life.
And, um, it's so, it's so beautiful. And it's a good reminder that like, yes, like God created this earth to give us, you know, the things that we need, like water and like food. Um, but the earthly resources. Are temporary and not eternally satisfying because therefore our temporary lives and our temporary bodies here on earth, but we need to really focus on Christ to quench our thirst and our hunger, um, and focus on him and, and feeding ourselves with his word to prioritize our eternal health, our eternal life.
Um, so I'm also going to read, uh, from John. 6, 25 through 35. This is a dialogue between Jesus and the Jews. This is right after, um, the feeding of the 5, 000. Uh, the Jews were basically like, whoa, Jesus, where'd you go? and he was like, you're only looking for me because I fed you and Uh, you were satisfied And he's like it's not because you're looking for me because of the miracles that I performed.
So He's basically saying you need to seek eternal food by believing in me. Um, and so he says in, um, John 6, 27, do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the son of man will give you for on him. God, the father has placed his seal of approval. So, you know, in all of our striving and all of our efforts, obviously, you know, we do.
We make money, we have to pay our bills, we have a roof over our head, we have food on the table. So, you know, we, we do work so that we can eat, but all of our striving should not be, for the temporary things of this world that do not. Satisfy us. So so here Jesus is saying Work for food that endures to eternal life and we've talked about this time and time again in the podcast like setting Our eyes on things above not on earthly things Um, so not letting ourselves get wrapped up and anxious about the things of this world including is this organic?
Is this you know, is this non gmo? Is this this is this that what? label does this have? Like, you know, where did I buy this from? Where is this imported from? Like, you know, we, we don't want to be ignorant. We want to be informed. But if it's creating anxiety and, , We're putting all of these things, uh, with a greater importance than, than God, we're doing more research on, you know, pesticides than we are, uh, on digging into God's word.
Then we got a little bit of a problem here.
Abbie: Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely. I heard of, um, a pastor say recently, like what you fill yourself with. You're going to be led by and so if you're filling yourself with all of these like different things online Versus filling yourself more on God's Word like you're gonna be led by those worldly things You're gonna be led by fear mongering and by anxiety.
You're not gonna be led by your Prince of Peace
Hannah: Yeah. Yeah, and I'm glad you brought that up because The internet is a is a beautiful thing and a horrible thing all at the same time and we have so much information at our fingertips and like I mentioned, it's important to not be ignorant. We should be informed because God designed us with beautiful brains that have a wonderful capacity for all of this information and knowledge.
, and so, we think about how, on the internet, whether it's YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, or just your search engine, whenever you're looking up, you're gonna get, Fed like advertisements and, and, um, you know, different websites with that specific thing.
So if your whole entire, um, algorithm, as they call it, is feeding you fear mongering, don't eat this, this is toxic, this is toxic, this and that, um, You know, have raw milk or you're not a good Christian. We have a whole episode on that and our thoughts on that. If your entire, you know, feed, , like Instagram feed, TikTok feed, or YouTube is promoting content that's fear mongering, , that's going to be your whole world.
You're going to be like, oh my gosh, everyone's talking about it. And you're, you're going to be reactive instead of cool, calm, collected. Uh, and educated. And if we think of God, we know that God is a God of order. And we shouldn't, you know, we're supposed to model that. And so if we see something and we think, Oh my gosh, this is concerning.
I'm going to look into this a little bit more. We do a little bit of digging, um, you know, and then you educate yourself and you move on. Um, and I think it's important to not be afraid, to not be reactive, um, because God doesn't give us a spirit of fear, right? So if, if what we're seeing is like all this horrible, horrible news, horrible information and food and this and that and the produce and the whatever, like, and it's a, it's very like, Fear based.
Um, that's not, that's not quite right. Right. So it is important. Yeah. And that's going to be leading you
Abbie: in your decision. Exactly. And I just pray that with these scriptures that Hannah read. Um, I hope that this will be helpful for people on our last episode that struggle with their relationship with food, whether that be overeating or gluttony or binge eating disorder.
I hope that, um, you're making room for Jesus to come in and say, like, let, let me fully satisfy you. Yes, you do need physical food for your human body, but beyond that, once you are done and you're satisfied physically, Let me satisfy you spiritually, let me feed your soul, because you could be physically full and like you're good in that way, but still feel an inner hunger, like your soul can thirst.
And, um, Psalm 63 talks about that, Lord, my soul thirsts for you. So, um, So I, I just pray that these scriptures, not just, you're not just listening to it in your ears. It's not just hitting you intellectually, but you're really receiving that into your heart. And I think everyone listening should really take some time this week to sit with those scriptures and let God speak to you through it and really hear Jesus.
And in what ways he needs to, to fully satisfy you and, that inner thirst and that inner hunger, because he's our living water and he is our bread of life.
Hannah: He is. He is. So, you know, in your quiet time, really question, are you focusing on the fear surrounding the bread and water of this world, or are you focusing on the peace that comes with the bread of life and the living water, , and I'll,, I'll close with, John.
635 that says, Then Jesus declared, I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.
