Hello, so we are going to open up our Bibles or just tune in if you're driving and we're going to be looking at Genesis 2 verses 2 through 3. And it says by the seventh day, God had finished the work he had been doing. So on the seventh day, he rested from all his work. Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy because on it, he rested from all of the work of creating that he had done.
So this really stood out to me the other day when I was reading it. Particularly the part that says that he blessed it and made it holy because he rested. And when we think about God, the creator of the universe, you know, he doesn't need to rest. Right? And we've talked about this before. I think we talked about it in our hustle culture episode where this was God modeling for his children how we should live.
And it also talks about the Sabbath, you know, in various parts of the Bible, but it talks about it in Exodus 20 as well, where God is saying, Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant.
Nor your animals or any foreigner residing in your towns, for in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, that he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. So here God is Commanding Moses to remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy.
So this verse is telling us that the Sabbath is a day of rest for everyone, including the animals. And we should not be working on this day. And I know that maybe, you know, We might, it might not be Sunday for you. It might not be Saturday for you, but it's so important to practice this because God wants us to.
He's told us to. He modeled it for us. He set apart this day. For us to rest and not just rest, but spend time with him and in his word and in communion with him. Whether you take the day and you say, I'm just gonna listen to worship music today, or I'm really gonna, you know, do a little bit extra in my, in my quiet time.
Maybe this is the day that you go to church with your family, and I know it's really tempting to like, you know, you go to church, you serve, you go to lunch after, and you know, maybe you want to clean the house, maybe you want to do this. And it's really hard. To find the time in the work week to do the things that you want to do in the household, it's really hard.
Yeah. And I don't have a perfect recipe, but I do know that God calls us to rest and to not do any work. And, you know, whether you got to sit down with your spouse or your family or your roommate or whoever and be like, okay, what can we do? What can we change? How can we set ourselves up for success to have a proper Sabbath?
Yeah. Yeah. And, you know, you work out your schedule, you say, instead of watching TV this night, we're going to meal prep on Monday, or whatever it may be, um, that's taking up your time on your Sunday, on your Saturday, um, so that you can really schedule that in. It's hard. And, you know, of course, in this podcast, we talk about food, body, exercise, and there's a lot of people who, you know, don't miss a day, don't miss a day at the gym.
Number one, I just want to say, it is actually important to have a rest day. You know, we do need a rest day for our bodies to recover. And, you know, the recommendation is, what is it, 150 minutes a week of moderate physical activity. It's like 75 minutes if it's like high intensity. That's a week, you know, and It's you think you can squeeze it in it doesn't have to be seven days a week.
You don't you know, if you if Exercise has this hold on you that you feel like I cannot skip a day I would challenge you to explore whether that is becoming your idol And I would challenge you to you know, maybe this is maybe it's becoming an idol Maybe it's becoming an obsession like an orthorexia type of type of issue um I would challenge you to do opposite action.
So if you're feeling really overwhelmed by guilt and shame when you take this rest day on the Sabbath, opposite action, sit down. Don't let yourself go to the gym. You know, sometimes we get ants in our pants and we can go for a little walk and maybe you can be praying and meditating, uh, or listening to your daily bread podcast on your walk.
Um, but you know, definitely challenge yourself there with that because the Lord loves you wants us to rest and spend time with him on a Sabbath day, whatever day that might be for you. Yeah, absolutely. And Ecclesiastes three talks about it, how there's a time and a place for everything. There's a season for everything.
And God created healthy rhythms, unforced rhythms of grace talks about in a map, Matthew 11 verse 28. And, um, the way that he created the world, he set us up knowing that God didn't need to rest. God is all powerful. He did not need a rest day. He took that rest day to model that to us, that we need rest, knowing that he was making us feel better.
With a limited capacity. And so it is a trust principle and I feel this very strongly as an entrepreneur. It is a trust principle to take a full day off from work, but I know, Hey God, I am setting this time. I'm consecrating this time, meaning I'm making it holy to spend time with you. I'm not going to work because I want the rest to be blessed.
And I, you know, I obviously want to follow your commandments, but it's in addition, it's when you consecrate the time, and you set something aside and make it holy. to be intentional with the Lord, he will bless the rest. So if you want the rest of your week to be blessed, if you want to have a productive week, if you want to get more done in less time, if you want to have, you know, just divine wisdom and revelation and, you know, greater productivity and greater recall.
And if maybe you have an interview this week or something going on, like, if you want those things to be blessed. Your time and your work and everything you're doing with your hands. You need to consecrate your time. You need to set in a time to make it holy and coming from that place of rest like that.
You're going to be able to just more strongly execute the rest of your week. Um, and you're going to be able to get more done in less time because it's coming from a full cup and coming from a place of rest. You're going to have something to actually pour out and not just be an empty picture. Um, so it's, it's very much, much a trust principle similar to the tithe.
Like when you return the first, the rest is blessed. And God says, like, test me in this, especially with the tithe. But, um, like that's like the one thing where it says to test me in that. So it's, it's a similar principle. It's like, okay, God, I'm trusting you with this. I'm setting aside this time. Um, Uh, but so that the rest will be blessed and you'll have God's favor on you because you're obeying his commandments and spending intentional time with him to rejuvenate.
And true rest truly comes when you are with him. Yeah. No, it's so true. And something that's coming to me right now is God on the six days. worked So productively, like, thank you for making the heavens and the earth. Um, obviously we cannot do that because we are not God, but What is our little tiny equivalent?
You know, I'm going to say something funny here. I hopefully it's not blasphemous, but God, it doesn't say that like on the second day he scrolled on TikTok on the second day, you know, he stayed up till, till 1am watching Netflix. Um, well, you know, you know what I mean? So what, how are we using our time in our work week on the days that we are called to do work?
How are we using our time? And that's not to say that, you know, we need to Hustling from the time we get up to the time we hit the pillow because there does have to be that wind down period where, where you dim the lights, you kind of calm down a little so that it's easier for you to fall asleep, you can have adequate rest.
Um, You know, but I'm looking at how, you know, how productive God was, how much order there was. There was order, there was productivity, and then he rested. And so, you know, this can kind of, we can kind of look back at the Proverbs 31 woman episode where she's getting up early before her household, she's taking care of things in the house, she's setting things up so that the day can be productive.
And, Hey, you know i'm just talking about god's word i'm not saying that I do this perfectly I definitely absolutely do not it's a constant struggle um But maybe we got to look at our screen time. Maybe we have to say, you know, maybe we have to have like a, you know, like when your boss tells you to like, uh, clock everything that you're doing just to make sure like you're being productive.
Um, maybe we have to do that for ourselves. Like, what did I do between the hours of 8am and 9am? What did I do between the hours of like 6pm and 7pm? You know, did you spend an hour kind of like doom scrolling and, and doing nothing? Um, and if you're going to do nothing, make it intentional. Make it an intentional rest so that you don't look up at the clock and say, what the heck did I just do?
Right. You know? So God models order, he models efficient work, and he models rest. And we are called to do these things as well.
