Hannah: Hello there, everybody. We are going to be talking today about fruit. Should we eat it? Should we not eat it? There's a lot of controversy around fruit. I never thought that we would be here in society where there's controversy surrounding fruit. So I'm going to open up with Genesis 1, 29 through 30 that says, Then God said to Adam, I give you every seed bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it.
They will be yours for food and to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground, everything that has the breath of life in it. I give every green plant for food. And it was so, so this can be the response to those who are saying we should not eat fruit.
Fruit has too much sugar. I'm Um, don't eat fruit in the morning, or only eat fruit in the morning, don't eat it before bed. There's a lot of controversy and fear and misinformation around fruit. And as Christians, we can see that God literally commanded the first human, Adam, to eat fruit. Correct. And we, you know, and Abby and myself studying nutrition, we know All of the nutrients that fruits and vegetables, that plants in general, have that are so beneficial to our health and well being and like, what a beautiful thing that God created fruit to not only be sweet and yummy, but to have all of these benefits for our body that we need.
So, the argument of fruit has too much sugar, okay. You should eat fruit. Yes. Should you eat an entire bucket of strawberries in one sitting? No. Obviously, God is a God of balance and order, even too much of a good thing is not always a good thing, right?
Let's say you're not scared of fruit and you're eating a bucket of strawberries because you're like well Fruit's good for me, and I don't want to have fat dietary fat. So i'm just gonna have Uh strawberries so I can be skinny like That rationale is, is fear based, first of all, and it's uninformed, um, and eating an entire, like, bowl of, of strawberries in one sitting, that's not, like, balanced, right?
Abbie: Right. Yeah, what's that one scripture that's, I think Paul said it in one of his letters to some church, but, um, that not everything that's good is beneficial or something like that.
Hannah: You know what I'm talking about? Something, yeah, I know, I know, I know what you're talking about, yeah, yeah. Yeah. And so, so we can also take that and, and know that, I mean, even drinking too much water in one go is, is also not good for you.
Um, so that's not to say that water's not good for you. It's not to say that fruit is, is not good for you. , but we want to have it in, in, You know, moderation reasonable. So if you're hungry and you want fruit, how about putting blueberries in your yogurt? How about having some strawberries with cottage cheese or having like some sort of berry on toast with peanut butter?
So you see how now we're having the fruit, but we're adding, um, other macros to it to allow. Uh, the digestion process to move more slowly through us, right? Like we're not just having the fruit which does have sugar. This is not a bad thing, okay? And there is a different response in the body to the sugar that is in fruit versus the sugar that's coming from like a cupcake or a cookie.
Because the fruits have fiber, you know that spike in our blood sugar is not as dramatic. Um, again, this is not to say that if you eat an entire bucket of strawberries that your blood sugar is going to be peachy. Um, but pairing it Peachy! Oh yeah, see, there you go. That's a fruit. So, um, but pairing it with like, for example, like toast, peanut butter, cottage cheese, yogurt, hard boiled egg,
Abbie: cheese stick.
Yeah, any of these things. Exactly. Even a protein bar, protein shake. Exactly. A hundred percent. That will help balance things out too, which I did look up the scripture. So it's first Corinthians 6, 12. Everything is permissible for me. But not everything is beneficial. So someone could look at that and be like, Oh, like I can eat fruit, but it's not good for me.
It's like, no, you can have fruit. It's in excess. It's, it's not beneficial. And if you do have blood sugar mismanagement issues, and you need to be intentional about that, the approach shouldn't be, the sustainable approach really isn't, the healthful approach isn't to just remove carbs from your diet.
Carbs, the way that God designed our body, our body wants to process carbs through glycolysis. Which in versus ketosis, a lot of people are like, Oh, like, you know, I have diabetes, so I will just go keto and cut out all carbs. That's not sustainable. Good luck with that. But, um, our body, if it wanted to be in ketosis, using fat as fuel, our body would have been designed to do that.
But that's not what God did. God has carbs be our preferred and primary energy source. So we just don't want to have carbs by themselves. Like I always say to clients, we don't want to have naked carbs. We want to pair them with something else. And that will help you to have a healthy relationship with carbs.
Cause it's like, what can I add to my plate versus what am I restricting and taking away, inviting more food anxiety and just a lack of peace around food.
Hannah: Right, and it's more satiating, too, to pair, you know, to have, like, the macros together, right? Um, you shouldn't just have, like, an entire, like, lump of steak or something, like, by itself.
Like, that's not really enjoyable. And it's the same thing, like, eating an entire loaf of bread or something, like, It's not as opposed to like having a sandwich that has like the bread and the protein slices in it and maybe a little bit of, um, some sauce or condiment that has a little bit of fat and maybe some tomato and lettuce and whatever, like there, suddenly you have balance, okay?
Yeah. And so, you know, fruit has fiber, so that aids in the stability of your, of the blood sugar spike and drop. Um, and then pairing it with something that has fat and protein as well, uh, will also help, uh, allow this, the rise and fall in your blood sugar to be a little bit more gradual. Um, I also saw a post where a man, I don't know who he was, but I couldn't, I couldn't investigate further because I was just so mad.
He was talking about how, um, the devil's favorite temptation is food and how Americans are digging their grave with a fork and a knife or whatever. Oh Lord. Lord, send revival. It was a lot. It was a lot. And he basically was like, think about it. The first temptation ever was food. And I was like, no. No, not really, because the first temptation ever was to be like God.
The first temptation, okay, yes, it involved the fruit, but the fruit was not bad because we know that God commanded Adam and Eve to eat the fruit from the trees, except from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, because then you will surely die. So this was one tree. So it wasn't the fruit that was the problem or the fruit that was the sin.
It was the act of disobeying God, falling into the temptation of the fruit. allowing themselves to be deceived by the serpent who said, did God really say that? God just doesn't want you to know good and evil because then you will be like God, don't you want all this wisdom to know good and evil to be like God?
And they were like, yes. So the, the sin and the temptation was to be like God. And the sin was disobeying God, being deceived and, and falling into temptation and disobeying God. It was not the freaking fruit people.
Abbie: Right? Correct. Wow. That just gives me a whole fresh perspective on that as well. And I'm sure that, And I pray that that revelation is very healing for some people.
Um, I also like look at all the different fruits out there. They all have different colors and different vitamin mineral compositions. And that's God's grace. That's how he designed it. Like not everyone likes every single fruit and that's okay. If you have a couple that you keep in your rotation, that's good.
Um, like, wow, he gave us such a variety and even, you know, going back to Genesis, good. He gave us such a variety of animals in the garden because he knew that not everyone was going to like every single animal and insect out there. Like that is just, that's so sweet. And each fruit has a different purpose.
Um, like a lot of people fear bananas and the constant, um, criticism I hear about bananas, which, you know, if you have gut health issues, you need to be lower FODMAP. Like you can have bananas. But you just want to make sure they're on the greener side, not when they're more ripe and like things like that, or people will say, oh, they lack fiber, they're lower in fiber.
So, you know, they're going to spike my blood sugar more. But bananas are recommended if you're having a lot of like loose stools and diarrhea, because it helps to, like, Yeah. Yeah. Apple apples as well. So yes, like they might be beneficial for some people, but they're so helpful if you're having other GI things going on and like, that's amazing.
Like that's God's grace. If you are working on building up your immune system, there's so many fruits that have vitamin C in them. That's amazing. That's nature's medicine. You don't necessarily need to take an emergency packet or whatever, some sort of supplement that you got from Tik TOK shop. You probably just need to eat more fruit, you know, get that immune system going.
If you need to be anti inflammatory or you want those anti inflammatory antioxidant benefits, blueberries are great for that. Um, a lot of people will take, you know, deep bloating supplements. off of TikTok shop when they actually need to be eating like more omega three fatty acids and things like that, you know, that we talked about in previous episodes, but blueberries are so great for that, for decreasing bloating and inflammation.
So I just, Oh, there's so many amazing benefits. And so don't let the enemy deceive you into thinking that fruit is bad. Fruit is good. And God commands us to eat it. Yes.
