Abbie: Hello. Hello. Welcome back to your daily bread podcast. I am going to be walking us through a spiritual practice today called Lectico Divino, which means divine scripture. This is going to be a very practical episode. So our intention for this week is to have you bring this into your quiet time. And I encourage you to pause the episode when we go through the exercise.
It'll make sense when we start to go through it, if you need more time in silence. So Lectico Divina is a spiritual practice that is an ancient spiritual practice that monks have done for years and still do. And it's another way to approach scripture. To allow God to speak through his living word to you to give you a specific message, there are certain times when we need to really treat scripture, like a textbook into study it and to get the historical context.
And there are also other times where. We need to not rush through a chapter or rush through a whole book of the Bible, but instead slow down, read a couple verses and meditate on them and let God speak to us through those couple verses. And especially this time of year when we're rushing around and it's just the hustle and bustle of the holiday season.
I hope that you can take this episode into your quiet time and, and find time to slow down. And we wanted to do an episode like this this week because the scripture that I picked for us to really meditate on is all about how God sees you. So if you're having a bad body image day, or if you're just questioning your identity, you're questioning your worth, or if you're good enough, no, no, no, you need to be reminded that you have the mind of Christ, and Christ lives within you, and God formed you, and you are fearfully and wonderfully made.
So, We need to remember and identify, we need to remember what God says about us and how God sees us so that we can start to see ourselves and remind ourselves how God sees us. So I want you to get comfortable, get relaxed. I'm going to read through the same scripture, the couple verses, four times. And I want you to be thinking about different questions with each read through and I'll go through what those questions are because that's what Lectico Divina is.
Lectico Divina is when you treat scripture like a love letter and you just let God speak to you. So there's certain prompts for each read through and then you'll have time and silence between each read through. Now I'll just do a couple seconds of silence. To pause, if you need more time, which I assume you will need more time to let God speak to you and to really sit with this, just pause the episode and take as much time as you need and then come back to it for the next read through.
So we'll get started. So get comfortable. Feel free to pause the episode until you are ready to let God speak to you and you're in a comfortable place ready to focus.
SO with this first read through, what I want you to be thinking about is what word or phrase Is God saying to me, what's sticking out to me.
And you will feel this in your spirit. You'll feel maybe something in your chest or your stomach. You'll feel some sort of resistance. You might start weeping. You will feel what word or phrase is meant for you today. Because you could listen to this episode on different days and have a completely different takeaway.
So the first read through, I just want you to think and start to sense in your body. Okay. What is the word or phrase that. Is sticking out to me. What is special for me today that God wants me to hear? We'll pause a little bit. Then with the second read through, I want you to be thinking about, okay, how does this relate to what I'm going through today?
How does this relate to my life right now and what I'm going through? And then we'll sit with that for a little bit. Then we'll read through it a third time. And I want you to be thinking, what is God's invitation for me? What's God's takeaway from this for me? What's God's invitation. And this is when you typically want to have a longer extended period of silence with God so that.
You can have a dialogue back and forth because he might be calling you to something or challenging a belief and you, you know, or getting you excited about something through the scripture, however, it's, it's relating to you right now. And you might be like, Oh, that sounds great, God, but I don't know if I'm good enough, or I don't know if I'm qualified.
I don't know if I'm ready for that, but that's not what I envisioned. So then if there's any sort of resistance or anything that's coming up for you. You want to spend a longer time in silence with God and dialogue with him back and forth. And then hopefully there will be some sort of resolution.
We'll read through it again, a fourth time. And that's when you can just rest in God's love, rest in the resolution. So this process can really take a long time. Um, but it's such an opportunity to lean into God's love and hear his message. Through the living word. Oh, it's just, it's so good. And I love approaching scripture this way because I hear from God so clearly.
And there are times when it's best to do a Bible study and to really treat the Bible like a textbook. But if we only do that, we miss out on these gifts from God and these opportunities for him to just whisper into our souls and really miss an opportunity for deeper healing. Okay, let's get into it. So this first read through, just be thinking about what is the word or phrase that's sticking out to me right now with this.
Okay. Get comfortable.
He who created you, Jacob, he who formed you, Israel, do not fear for I have redeemed you. I have called you by name. You are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you. When you pass through the rivers, They will not overwhelm you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned. The flames will not set you ablaze.
For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. You are precious and honored in my sight. I love you.
Pause here if you need some more time in silence.
For this second read through, I want you to be thinking about, Okay, how does this relate to what I'm going through right now in my life?
He who created you, Jacob. He who formed you, Israel. Do not fear, for I have redeemed you. I have called you by name. You are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you. When you pass through the rivers, they will not overwhelm you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned. The flames will not set you ablaze, for I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.
You are precious and honored in my sight. I love you.
Pause here if you need more time and silence.
With this third read through, you might need an extended period of time in silence with God, because I want you to be thinking about, what is God's invitation for me?
He who created you, Jacob. He who formed you. Israel, do not fear, for I have redeemed you.
I love you.
Pause now and take as much time as you need and sit in silence with God until you feel that there's a resolution or at least some closure on this for today.
And with this last read through, just rest in God's love. And just rest in this resolution that you two have had together and soak up his presence. He who created you, Jacob, he who formed you, Israel, do not fear, for I have redeemed you. I have called you by name. You are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you.
When you pass through the rivers. They will not overwhelm you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned. The flames will not set you ablaze. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. You are precious and honored in my sight. I love you.
Amen. Pause and take any more time that you need in God's presence.
Thank you so much for engaging in the spiritual practice with me today. Know that you can engage in Lectico Divina, Divine Scripture, at any time. Just take a few verses and slow down. Read them through multiple times and get comfortable sitting in silence with the Lord and letting him speak to you. God has things that he wants to say to you.
We just have to give him the space to speak. And slow down enough. To really hear him. Revelations 3. 20 says that he's the one that's knocking at the door. We have to open the door and let him in. So sometimes our opening the door is just sitting down long enough to hear God speak to us personally.
We'll see you next week.
